Student Organization Advisors

Being an advisor is a valuable way to connect and inspire students to exercise the leadership potential within themselves. Student Organizations and Leadership would like to thank you for taking on this important role and would like to provide you with a few resources to assist you along the way.

Advisor Responsibilities

An advisor’s responsibilities can include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Meet with student organization leadership, at least once per semester, to discuss the goals, progress, and direction of the group.
  2. Provide guidance to the organization on operations including, but not limited to goal setting, program planning, collaboration, time management, problem solving, usage of facilities, budget management, and fiscal responsibilities.
  3. Be accessible and available to the student organization leadership and members.
  4. Remain knowledgeable about the organization and its mission, as well as the officers and members.
  5. Mediate interpersonal conflicts that may arise.
  6. Be a resource for student organizations, particularly regarding College policies, resources, regulations, and services.
  7. Review and approve all forms submitted by the organization, including the constitution submitted in the Annual Recognition Process.
  8. Be aware of the events and activities of your student organization, including major activities and travel.
  9. An advisor (or approved Campus Staff/Faculty) must attend all major organization events, especially when travel is involved. Attend other organizational meetings and functions as desired.
  10. Advisors should not advise more than two groups at a time.
  11. Maintain open communication with the Coordinator of Student Organizations.
  12. Be available for questions and consultation with the Student Engagement and Leadership office.
  13. Understand role as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) (federally mandated crime reporter) for the College. As such advisors shall immediately report any Clery Act crimes that they are made aware of, to Columbia College Chicago Campus Safety and Security.
